Wildfoods Festival

Hokitika

Festivals

Wildfoods is a hugely popular celebration of the West Coast’s unique lifestyle, food and hospitality and is an extravaganza of gourmet bush-tucker. Based on the region’s natural food sources, from the land and sea, the emphasis is on novel, tasty and healthy foods presented in an innovative manner. Be at your palate-punishing best and try some old favourites such as gorse-flower scones and billy tea, possum pâté, ostrich pie and West Coast whitebait.

Jack's Gasthof

Charleston

Restaurants

It is definitely worth venturing off the highway and down the track to this tiny rural eatery on the banks of the Little Totara River, even if German owners Jack and Petra occasionally forget to remove the ‘closed’ sign on the road! Utterly divine sour-dough rye bread and organic wholemeal loaves are baked here daily. They also make the meanest pizzas you'll find on the wild west coast and serve a three-course meal each Thursday evening.

  • Prices: Closed Mondays.
  • Contact: SH 6, 23 km south of Westport

The Tin Shed

Hokitika

Restaurants

This Tin Shed tardis may hint at bygone gold-rush days but step inside and a wealth of local art, craft and playful design waits. Dine in the creatively-lit gallery to softly moody jazz and blues tunes (Ray is big on his music) or claim a sea-viewing garden perch out the back. Either way you’ll be surrounded by rustic charm and treated to great food and service.

  • Prices: Breakfast $14; lunch $4 - $16, large pizzas $20; dinner, entrées $7.50 - $14, mains $21 - $27, desserts $7.50 - $9.

  • Tel: 03-755-8444

West Coast Highlights

  • Drive the beautiful coastal route from Westport to Haast; it's quite rightly considered one of world's most extraordinary drives. Stop off to stretch your legs at Punakaiki and walk to see the Pancake Rocks and its blowholes.
  • Try black-water rafting in the glowworm grotto of Charleston caves near Westport.
